Missing currency symbols

Based on their articles and local examples:

ISK: kr‎ (local example)

JOD: د.أ‎‎ (local example)

MAD: DH‎ (local example)

MDL: L

TJS: SM

Symbols added; position of ISK, MAD switched to 'after'. Position of JOD symbol is before with space because that is how the 'local' example shows it but that is on a page that is wholly right-to-left; is that correct for en.wiki which is wholly left-to-right? MDL and TJS left as 'before-with-space' because local examples not given for them:

These are not dedicated currency symbols, they are abbreviations. Not a problem if you have put them in the correct column but I can't work out quickly what you have done? 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 16:49, 4 July 2026 (UTC)

I should have said "I can't see quickly the effect of what you have done" (I could see your contributions). I don't know which articles use that module. So I suspect my reference to "the correct column" probably didn't make a lot of sense in the context of your change, since that is a subsequent presentation issue.

(BTW, in searching around for the effect, I noticed that we seem to have quite a few articles that list currencies, with a lot of duplication. Some distinguish between abbreviations and symbols. some don't. A Labour of Hercules for someone to clean up and merge, sometime, maybe.) 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 10:34, 5 July 2026 (UTC)

$, £, ¥, and all other currently allocated currency signs should be on pages 3–4 (because they're in other Unicode blocks). Does the sign–abbreviation distinction matter as far as Template:Currency is concerned though? Vancho (talk) 21:56, 6 July 2026 (UTC)

It depends on context. If we are talking about actual dedicated currency symbols, then the distinction does matter and we can confuse our readers by sloppy usage.

Take for example the Molovan Leu. {{currency|1000|MDL}} produces L 1,000. But that L is an abbreviation, not a currency symbol. What ee really have here a case of use-mention distinction and the resolution is always going to be "entertaining". Therefore (IMO!) if an article is just giving prices in Leu where the price is the important item, then it would be pedantic and annoying to interrupt the flow to assert the distinction. But if the context is about the presentation of prices in Leu, then it would certainly be appropriate to identify the issue.

Fun fact: until maybe a hundred or two years ago, the pound sign was also just a simple l. or L. (see Diary of Samuel Pepys for examples). But in the blackletter typeface of the tiem the letter was as ${\mathfrak {L}}$, sometimes with a horizontal dash to indicate abbreviation (of libra). Writing styles moved on but the arch-conservative Bank of England did not and eventually this antique form of the letter became crystallised as the first dedicated currency symbol. SAR: currently ر.س 1, should be ⃁ (usage example)

KGS: currently KGS 1, should be ⃀ (usage example) — renders fine on Windows, macOS may still be behind Vancho (talk) 20:46, 6 July 2026 (UTC)

New currency, historical currencies

First, the new currency of Zimbabwe (ZWG) is missing in currency_properties.

Second, since I noticed Zimbabwe's old currency (ZWL) is still included in currency_properties, I also checked for all currencies that out of use but still there — not sure what's the policy with these:

1. ANG
2. BGN
3. CUC
4. HRK
5. SLL
6. SVC
7. ZWL

Alternative for Icelandic króna

Since the Icelandic króna abbreviation (1 kr) can be confused for the Danish krone (kr. 1), Norwegian krone (kr 1), and Swedish krona (kr 1), I think there should be an ISK2 input. Vancho (talk) 14:14, 15 July 2026 (UTC)
