A lumper is a worker who unloads semi-trucks at warehouses.
Terminology
[edit]The term lumper originated in Hull, England in reference to the casual employment of dock workers to "work on the lump" to unload ships for a "lump" payment.[1] With in the United States, the term lumper had evolved by the 1980s to to refer to unloaders serving motor carriers.[2]
Lumpers are also referred to as "swampers," "humpers," "house men," "gypsy chasers," or "big boys".[2]
