Legacy Hotels & Resorts (Pty) Ltd is a South African hotel management and hospitality company. The company manages and operates a portfolio that includes city hotels, resorts, bush lodges and mixed-use hospitality properties in South Africa and elsewhere in Africa.[1]
Notable properties associated with the Legacy portfolio include Sandton's The Leonardo, Michelangelo Towers, Raphael Penthouse Suites, DAVINCI Hotel & Suites, Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge, Bakubung Bush Lodge, The Commodore Hotel, The Portswood Hotel, The Centurion Hotel, Windhoek Country Club Resort and Swakopmund Hotel & Entertainment Centre.[2]
History
[edit]Legacy Hotels & Resorts was established in 1999 through a management buyout of the operations of Stocks Hotels & Resorts Limited.[1]
The predecessor hotel operation was active by 1984, when it traded as Stocks Hotels & Resorts.[3]
In 2001, Legacy Group Holdings (Pty) Ltd, a consortium led by Bart Dorrestein, acquired Stocks Leisure Developments.[4] Legacy Hotels & Resorts separately acquired the management agreements for a number of resorts in the acquired portfolio, including Kruger Park Lodge, Hermanus Beach Club, Wilderness Dunes, Brookes Hill Suites, Castleburn and La Côte d'Azur, as well as the timeshare components of Bakubung and Kwa Maritane.[4]
At the time of the acquisition, Legacy Hotels & Resorts' separate hotel and resort portfolio included the Michelangelo Hotel in Sandton, The Commodore and The Portswood in Cape Town, Centurion Lake Hotel, and the Bakubung and Kwa Maritane resort hotels in the Pilanesberg.[4]

[edit]Legacy Hotels & Resorts operates in the hospitality sector, with a portfolio that includes city hotels, leisure resorts, bush lodges, casino resorts, conference properties, restaurants and mixed-use hospitality developments. Its current footprint includes South Africa, Namibia and Gabon.[1]
Legacy Hotels & Resorts has previously managed and marketed hospitality businesses in Zimbabwe and other African countries.[5]
According to the company, Legacy Hotels & Resorts forms part of the wider Legacy Group, which includes related but legally separate businesses involved in property development, residential property and lifestyle services.[1]

[edit]Legacy Hotels & Resorts manages and markets a portfolio of hotels, resorts and lodges in South Africa and elsewhere in Africa.[1] Its notable properties include the following.
The Leonardo is a mixed-use skyscraper in Sandton, Johannesburg, developed by the Legacy Group in partnership with Nedbank Corporate and Investment Banking. The building opened in 2020 and includes hotel suites, residences, offices and retail. It was reported as Africa's tallest skyscraper at the time.[6]
Michelangelo Towers is a mixed-use building and hotel property in Sandton, Johannesburg. It overlooks Nelson Mandela Square and forms part of the Sandton Central Precinct, which includes Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square, and is commonly associated with the area described as "Africa's richest square mile".[7]
DAVINCI Hotel & Suites is a luxury hotel in Sandton's Legacy Corner precinct, overlooking Nelson Mandela Square and close to Sandton City. The hotel forms part of the wider Sandton Central hospitality and retail precinct and has been positioned as a venue for business, diplomatic and political visitors to Johannesburg.[8]
Legacy's portfolio includes Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge and Bakubung Bush Lodge in the Pilanesberg, as well as the Windhoek Country Club & Resort and Swakopmund Hotel & Entertainment Centre in Namibia.[3][9]
The group operates in Gabon, where it opened a hotel in Libreville.[10]
Shareholding dispute
[edit]Legacy Hotels & Resorts became involved in a shareholding dispute over control of the company between interests associated with founder Bart Dorrestein and Ensemble Hotel Holdings. Ensemble is ultimately linked to the Libyan African Investment Company, which falls under the Libyan Investment Authority, Libya's sovereign wealth fund.[11]
The dispute was considered by the Gauteng Division of the High Court in Johannesburg, which ordered that the parties' interests in Legacy Hotels & Resorts be separated through a private auction process.[12]
The High Court's order was subsequently appealed to the Supreme Court of Appeal, which heard the matter on 8 May 2026.[13]
The case was described as significant because of its relevance to "corporate governance, international sanctions and the future of foreign sovereign investment in domestic assets". The dispute was also reported in the context of Legacy's important position in South Africa's hospitality and tourism value chain, including its association with flagship properties such as Michelangelo Towers and The Leonardo.[11]
