Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from Wikipedia:Mfd)

Miscellany for deletion (MfD) is a place where Wikipedians decide what should be done with problematic pages in the namespaces which aren't covered by other specialized deletion discussion areas. Items sent here are usually discussed for seven days; then they are either deleted by an administrator or kept, based on community consensus as evident from the discussion, consistent with policy, and with careful judgment of the rough consensus if required.

Filtered versions of the page are available at

Information on the process

[edit]

What may be nominated for deletion here:

  • Pages not covered by other XFD venues, including pages in these namespaces: Draft:, Help:, Portal:, MediaWiki:, Wikipedia: (including WikiProjects), User:, TimedText:, MOS:,[a] Event: and the various Talk: namespaces
  • Userboxes, regardless of the namespace
  • File description pages when the file itself is hosted on Commons
  • Any other page, that is not in article space, where there is dispute as to the correct XFD venue.

Requests to undelete pages deleted after discussion here, and debate whether discussions here have been properly closed, both take place at Wikipedia:Deletion review, in accordance with Wikipedia's undeletion policy.

Notes

  1. ↑ The vast majority of pages in the MOS: namespace are redirects, which should be discussed at RfD. MfD is only applicable for the handful of its non-redirect pages.

Before nominating a page for deletion

[edit]

Before nominating a page for deletion, please consider these guidelines:

Deleting pages in your own userspace
  • If you want to have your own userpage or a draft you created deleted, there is no need to list it here; simply tag it with {{db-userreq}} or {{db-u1}} if it is a userpage, or {{db-author}} or {{db-g7}} if it is a draft. If you wish to clear your user talk page or sandbox, just blank it.
Deletions in draftspace
  • Unlike articles, drafts are generally not deleted solely due to lack of demonstrated notability or context.
  • Drafts that have not been edited in six months may be deleted under criterion for speedy deletion G13 and do not need nomination here.
  • Duplications in draftspace are usually satisfactorily fixed by redirection. If the material is in mainspace, redirect the draft to the article, or a section of the article. If multiple draft pages on the same topic have been created, tag them for merging. See WP:SRE.
  • For further information on draft deletion, including when nomination here is appropriate, see WP:NMFD
Deleting pages in other people's userspace
  • Consider explaining your concerns on the user's talk page with a personal note or by adding {{subst:Uw-userpage}} ~~~~  to their talk page. This step assumes good faith and civility; often the user is simply unaware of the guidelines, and the page can either be fixed or speedily deleted using {{db-userreq}}.
  • Take care not to bite newcomers – sometimes using the {{subst:welcome}} or {{subst:welcomeg}} template and a pointer to WP:UP would be best first.
  • Problematic userspace material is often addressed by the User pages guidelines including in some cases removal by any user or tagging to clarify the content or to prevent external search engine indexing. (Examples include copies of old, deleted, or disputed material, problematic drafts, promotional material, offensive material, inappropriate links, 'spoofing' of the MediaWiki interface, disruptive HTML, invitations or advocacy of disruption, certain kinds of images and image galleries, etc) If your concern relates to these areas consider these approaches as well, or instead of, deletion.
  • User pages about Wikipedia-related matters by established users usually do not qualify for deletion.
  • Articles that were recently deleted at AfD and then moved to userspace are generally not deleted unless they have lingered in userspace for an extended period of time without improvement to address the concerns that resulted in their deletion at AfD, or their content otherwise violates a global content policy such as our policies on Biographies of living persons that applies to any namespace.
Policies, guidelines and process pages
  • Established pages and their sub-pages should not be nominated, as such nominations will probably be considered disruptive, and the ensuing discussions closed early. This is not a forum for modifying or revoking policy. Instead consider tagging the page as {{historical}} and/or moving it into the historical archive, or redirecting it somewhere.
  • Proposals still under discussion generally should not be nominated. If you oppose a proposal, discuss it on the policy page's discussion page. Consider being bold and improving the proposal. Modify the proposal so that it gains consensus. Also note that even if a policy fails to gain consensus, it is often useful to retain it as a historical record, for the benefit of future editors.
WikiProjects and their subpages
  • It is generally preferable that inactive WikiProjects not be deleted, but instead be marked as {{WikiProject status|inactive}}, redirected to a relevant WikiProject, or changed to a task force of a parent WikiProject, unless the WikiProject was incompletely created or is entirely undesirable.
  • WikiProjects that were never very active and which do not have substantial historical discussions (meaning multiple discussions over an extended period of time) on the project talk page should not be tagged as {{historical}}; reserve this tag for historically active projects that have, over time, been replaced by other processes or that contain substantial discussion (as defined above) of the organization of a significant area of Wikipedia. Before deletion of an inactive project with a founder or other formerly active members who are active elsewhere on Wikipedia, consider moving it into the historical archive, or userfication.
  • Notify the main WikiProject talk page when nominating any WikiProject subpage, in addition to standard notification of the page creator.
Alternatives to deletion
  • Normal editing that does not require the use of any administrator tools, such as merging the page into another page or renaming it, can often resolve problems.
  • Pages in the wrong namespace (e.g. an article in Wikipedia namespace), can simply be moved and then tag the redirect for speedy deletion using {{db-g6|rationale=it's a redirect left after a cross-namespace move}}. Notify the author of the original article of the cross-namespace move.
Alternatives to MfD
  • Speedy deletion If the page clearly satisfies a "general" or "user" speedy deletion criterion, tag it with the appropriate template. Be sure to read the entire criterion, as some do not apply in the user space.

Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Article Rescue Squadron/Rescue list (2nd nomination)/deletion sorting (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) – (View MfD)

This is the creation of a blocked user in violation of their block. I would have tagged for speedy deletion, but a nomination was declined back in 2017 due to transclusion concerns. I don't think those concerns are still relevant (only one pages transcludes this one according to WhatLinksHere), but I'm bringing it here just to be safe. Chess enjoyer (talk) 03:51, 4 October 2026 (UTC) (Struck at 04:01, 4 October 2026 (UTC))reply

Actually, the master was only blocked 2 days after this page was created, so I don't think this is a G5. I still think this should be deleted, though. I don't see the point of this, and the fact that this is a subpage of an MFD is really odd. Chess enjoyer (talk) 04:01, 4 October 2026 (UTC)reply

Wikipedia:Article Rescue Squadron (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) – (View MfD)
All prior XfDs for this page:

To put things bluntly, this is a big violation of WP:Canvassing that doesn't even try to hide its attempts to convince others that articles up for deletion should be preserved. There's no credible pretense of neutrality for the notifications that get listed here. I don't know how the squadron got away with existing for so long, but a deprecation here is long overdue. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 03:20, 4 October 2026 (UTC)reply

Keep. meta:Eventualism and meta:Inclusionism were founding philosophies critical to the success of early Wikipedia. Outlawing, purging them, will mark such a change that I call it the beginning of the end.
The ARS are enthusiasts for the original vision that became Wikipedia. They are understandably frustrated by cold rules and deletionism. The answer is not purging them. SmokeyJoe (talk) 03:54, 4 October 2026 (UTC)reply

South Island Talk archives (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) – (View MfD)

Archiving was set up for Talk:South Island but was configured poorly, creating sporadic monthly archives containing few threads, and leaving no links from the Talk page to the archives. I have switched to numbered archives, and consolidated all archived threads to Talk:South Island/Archive 1. Lowercase sigmabot III has since run and worked well. However, there are links to three now-emptied archives. I am assuming that, if these are deleted, when Lowercase sigmabot III eventually needs to re-create an Talk:South Island/Archive 2, it will be able to do so automatically. Nurg (talk) 23:28, 3 October 2026 (UTC)reply

I'm not sure this nomination has worked properly, as South Island Talk archives is a redlink. I used a 'GroupName' per step I of the instructions. Steps II and III contained nothing further about a group nomination, so I assumed I should use the GroupName where it specified 'PageName'. If I should have done something different, sorry, I haven't done a MfD before. The instructions didn't seem to suggest anything else, but maybe I missed something. User:Cartoon News (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) – (View MfD)

Contains SVGs of various copyrighted logos of TV shows, films, studios, etc. I am aware the user is already blocked, but this is a separate issue unrelated to the edit war for which they were blocked. In solidarity, Gommeh (talk 🎮 sign) 18:05, 2 October 2026 (UTC)reply

Not all of these are copyrighted, some are {{PD-textlogo}}, {{PD-shape}} or similar. Just remove any that are incompatible with the NFCC. Report if they're restored improperly. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 19:20, 2 October 2026 (UTC)reply
  • Keep - the page itself is not a copyright violation, nor are any of the logos at a glance. These all appear to be Commons hosted logos which do not meet the threshold of originality for copyright or are no longer under copyright. If there are any specific logos that you feel are copyright violations, you can nominate them for deletion at Commons and when they are deleted there, then they disappear from this page. There is no need to delete this page, nor delete the section with the logos. -- Whpq (talk) 21:02, 3 October 2026 (UTC)reply
  • Keep per Whpq. If there are any copyvios here, deleting the page or removing the section won't solve the larger issue because they'll still be on Commons. If any images on Commons need deleting, that won't require us to edit the page because a bot will handle that for us. If the images are okay to host on Commons, then there is nothing wrong with having them on a userpage. The aforementioned block is irrelevant and has already expired, so let's just leave this person's userpage alone. Chess enjoyer (talk) 21:50, 3 October 2026 (UTC)reply
  • Keep. Wrong forum. Copyright concerns of images should be addressed at WP:FfD or at commons. SmokeyJoe (talk) 22:41, 3 October 2026 (UTC)reply

Speedy delete as copyright infringement (G12), since the first line is a copyright notice. It is possible but unprovable that the creator is the author, but prudence requires us to a) take the copyright notice at face value, b) remove the content. Martinp (talk) 17:14, 2 October 2026 (UTC)reply

Speedy delete/Speedy redirect to Khmer Empire: For speedy delete, G15. For speedy redirect, it is an essay about the Khmer Empire, and we have article about that, so it's best to redirect it there. Guythatlikeshorses2talk 10:28, 2 October 2026 (UTC)reply

Keep. A user sandbox, which can plausibly be notes for their encyclopedic editing. No disruption asserted in the deletion nomination, so no reason to delete. Creator has made encyclopedic edits, which is why U7 got declined. Not unambiguous enough as LLM use for a G15. If creator goes inactive, U6 will take care of it in due course, in the meanwhile it is harmless. (General comment: LLM use is harmful when it gets into Main or Wikipedia space, or if it is used in inter-user communications. It is not worth seeking out in user sandboxes, which are a form of jot notes. If a user chooses to use an LLM in their preparatory notes, and then checks the results and rewrites it in their encyclopedic editing, nothing bad has happened.) Archive, do not delete. Archive, whether by blanking and tagging as an archive, or by converting to a redirect. They have non-trivial histories, so G6 should not be used. Deletion of once-functional project pages should be reserved for things that should never have been created. Administrator elections are a whole community matter, and so hiding some of the history from nonadmins is a bad thing to do. SmokeyJoe (talk) 21:43, 10 September 2026 (UTC)reply
@SmokeyJoe: Deletion of once-functional project pages should be reserved for things that should never have been created. So you're ok with deleting the most recent one, then? It never had utility and was created in error (a perfectly reasonable mistake, of course); in fact the author indicated that she would be fine if it were G7ed. And it was the only one I initially suggested should be deleted before this discussion was formally opened.
Just seeking clarity on your stance :) Mr. Starfleet Command (talk) 21:52, 10 September 2026 (UTC)reply
Yes. The last one was not used, was made by mistake, and the author consents (its G7 eligible). SmokeyJoe (talk) 22:24, 10 September 2026 (UTC)reply
