Wikipedia:Genealogy sources

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from Wikipedia:MYHERITAGE)

Genealogy and related websites, including (but not limited to)

are user generated, and as such are not suitable sources to cite in Wikipedia article.

However, they can be useful resources, for determining where to look for sources that are suitable, or for finding scans of primary sources that can be suited in biographies, so long as they are not for living people.

For example, copies of the various England & Wales censuses can be accessed via providers such as the Ancestry, MyHeritage, etc. The policy of The National Archives is to enter partnerships with these businesses, so they are the medium that provides this information digitally, from behind their paywall. The Wikipedia Library grants established editors free access to some such sites for these reasons.

Care must be taken not to conflate different individuals with the same or similar names, even if their dates coincide.

Genealogy sites may contain portrait images that are either copyright expired or usable on Wikipedia under fair use criteria.

Identifiers (URL slugs) for individuals with Wikipedia biographies, derived from various genealogy websites, can be added to their equivalent items in Wikidata.
