Washington Road is a 59.5 miles (95.8 km) major road in the U.S. state of Georgia from Red Oak, east of College Park in Atlanta, eastward to Augusta. It travels in five separate segments through the southeastern part of Fulton County, the central part of Oglethorpe County, the northeastern part of Taliaferro County, the northwestern and the central parts of McDuffie County, and the northeastern parts of Columbia County and Richmond County.
Route description
[edit]Fulton County segment
[edit]Washington Road officially begins as a four-lane road at an roundabout intersection with US 29/SR 14 (Roosevelt Highway) in Red Oak, in the southwestern Atlanta (Fulton County) area. Later, it approaches an interchange with Interstate 285 (I-285; Atlanta Bypass). After passing the interchange, the roadway narrows to two lanes as it goes through the neighborhoods. The roadway expands back to four lanes as it meets an intersection of the eastern terminus of Desert Drive. Washington Road later meets SR 6 (Camp Creek Parkway). At this intersection, the roadway narrows back to two lanes. Washington Road curves more east-northeast as it goes through neighborhoods south of Meadow Lark Estates. At an intersection with the eastern terminus of Stone Road and the western terminus of Lyle Avenue, Washington Road expands back into four lanes. It later narrows back to two lanes, but gained a center lane as it meets and passes the western terminus of Chateau Boulevard. It turns east while going through neighborhoods before entering downtown East Point, where it meets its eastern terminus at US 29/SR 14/SR 139 (Legion Way/Main Street/East Point Street). The roadway continues past its eastern terminus as Irene Kidd Parkway.[1]
Prior to 1950, the roadway in Fulton County was formerly known as Washington Street, before being renamed to Washington Road. It formerly continued beyond US 29/SR 14/SR 139 towards downtown Atlanta. The remainder of the two very short existing segments of Washington Street, east of US 29/SR 14/SR 139 was renamed to Washington Avenue.[6]
Oglethorpe County segment
[edit]Washington Road resumes in Lexington, Oglethorpe County at an intersection where SR 77 departs its concurrency with US 78/SR 10/SR 22. SR 77 goes north-northeast along Elberton Road towards Elberton and Hartwell. The roadway west of this intersection continues towards the downtown as Main Street. Washington Road continues its concurrency along with US 78/SR 10/SR 22 to leave the city limits of Lexington and begin a curve to the east-southeast. About 1 mile (1.6 km) later, SR 22 departs the concurrency to the south-southeast on Crawfordville Road towards Philomath and Crawfordville. US 78/SR 10/Washington Road crosses over Long Creek, before curving to the south-southeast and then to the east-southeast. They cross over Buffalo Creek, curve back to the southeast, and make an easterly jaunt. Southeast of the University of Georgia Farm Lake, Washington Road meets its eastern terminus as US 78/SR 10 crosses over Dry Fork Creek into Wilkes County, at the Oglethorpe–Wilkes county line. From here, US 78/SR 10 takes on the Lexington Road name towards Rayle and Washington.[2]
Taliaferro County segment
[edit]Washington Road resumes in Sharon, Taliaferro County at an intersection with SR 47 and the former northern terminus of SR 269 (Barnett Road). At this intersection, SR 47 eastbound turns left from Sharon Street to head along Washington Road to the north-northeast. SR 47/Washington Road travels through rural areas of the county for 5.2 miles (8.4 km). Washington Road meets its eastern terminus as SR 47 enters Wilkes County at the Taliaferro–Wilkes county line, towards Washington as Sharon Road.[3]
McDuffie County segment
[edit]Washington Road resumes in McDuffie County, after US 78/SR 10/SR 17 crosses bridge over the Little River at the Wilkes–McDuffie county line. From the other side of the bridge crossing, US 78/SR 10/SR 17 continue to the northwest toward Washington as Thomson Road. They curve to the east-southeast and intersect the western terminus of Smith Mill Road, which leads to the Clarks Hill Wildlife Management Area. Just southeast of Moore Road, they curve back to the northwest. They cross over Hart Creek and then cross over Big Creek. North of an intersection with the western terminus of Huntington Road, the concurrency curves to the southeast. They then intersect the southern terminus of SR 43 (Lincolnton Road). Between an intersections with an intersection with Stagecoach Road and the eastern terminus of South Lake Drive, they skirt along the eastern edge of Belle Meade Country Club. They intersect the eastern terminus of Tech Drive, which leads to the Thomson–McDuffie County Regional Airport and the McDuffie campus of Augusta Technical College. Soon, they intersect the northern terminus of western Thomson Bypass (signed as West Bypass) and the western terminus of Edmunds Road. They later approached an intersection with eastern terminus of Knox Rivers Road and the northern terminus of SR 17 Bypass (SR 17 Byp.; eastern Thomson Bypass), where US 78/SR 10 leaves the concurrency to join the bypass. Just north of North Seymour Drive, they have an interchange with I-20 (Carl Sanders Highway). Soon, just south of I-20 and an intersection with the southern terminus of Noble Street, they enter the city limits of Thomson. They intersect the southern terminus of the western segment of Wrightsboro Road and the northern terminus of Harrison Road (former US 78/SR 10 east). Immediately, Washington Road soon comes to an end when SR 17 intersects the northern terminus of Martin Luther King Jr. Street. From here, SR 17 continues south towards downtown Thomson, as Main Street.[4]
Columbia–Richmond County segment
[edit]From the Little River to Pollards Corners
[edit]Washington Road resumes in Columbia County, at the Lincoln–Columbia county line, on the Price–Legg Bridge over the Little River, concurrent again with SR 47. Northwest of here, SR 47 has the local name of Augusta Highway towards Lincolnton. SR 47/Washington Road travel to the southeast. After a southerly jog, they continue to the southeast, skirting along the southwest of Pointes West Army Resort (signed as Fort Gordon Recreation Area), access via Pike Avenue. The roadway curves east to meet eastern terminus of Old Lincolnton Road, before meeting the western terminus of Ray Owens Road in Leah. They later meet Ridge Road, that provides acess to campground. The roadway curves south, and they meet the eastern terminuses of Eubank Drive and Keg Pointe Road. Soon, they meet the southern terminus of Keg Creek Drive, before cross over Keg Creek on the Major Byron S. McGuire Sr. Memorial Bridge. The roadway curves east toward the southwestern edge of Wildwood Park, access via Dogwood Lane. Just over 1 mile (1.6 km) later, the roadway enters Pollards Corner. There, they have an intersection with SR 150 (Cobbham Road). SR 47/SR 150/Washington Road travel concurrently for one block. At an four-way stop blinker-light intersection with US 221, SR 47 splits off to travel concurrent with US 221 south, while SR 150 splits off to travel concurrent with US 221 north. This intersection also marks the western terminus of SR 104, which travels concurrent with Washington Road for approximately half its length.[5]
From Pollards Corners to Evans
[edit]SR 104/Washington Road passes the Pollard Lumber area to meet the western terminus of Burks Mountain Road. Just over about 2 miles (3.2 km) later, after meeting the southern terminus of Rosemount Road, they cross over Kiokee Creek on the Robert W. Pollard Bridge. The roadway curves south, then they meet an intersection with the eastern terminus of Tubman Road and the southern terminus of the North Tubman Road. Slightly 1 mile (1.6 km) after that, they cross over Little Kiokee Creek on the B. Edward Tankersley Memorial Bridge. After crossing the bridge, the center lane begins in the middle of the road; before they meet an intersection with the southern terminus of General Wood Parkway, which provides access to the Riverwood Plantation neighborhoods and Greenbrier schools. The roadway curves east, then they meet the eastern terminus of Old Washington Road. They later meet an intersection with William Few Parkway near Evans. At this intersection, the roadway widens into four lanes with a center lane. Soon, they cross over Euchee Creek on the G.B. "Dip" Lamkin Bridge. They meet the southern terminus of Hardy McManus Road, then meeting the northern terminus of Greenbrier Avenue. Later, they meet the eastern terminus of Halali Farm Road. They curve to the southeast, then meets an intersection with the southern terminus of Cummings Drive and the northern terminus of Blanchard Road. They later meet the western terminus of Gibbs Road (which along with Cox Road and Owens Road, forms a southern bypass route for Evans), before curving to the east to enter the city limits of Evans.[5]
From Evans to Augusta
[edit]In the city of Evans, SR 104/Washington Road pass through the south of the Evans Walmart, then travel southwest of Evans Towne Park; as meeting western terminuses of Ronald Reagan Drive (which goes to downtown) and Evans-To-Locks Road, and the eastern terminus of Sir Galahad Drive. Access to Savannah Rapids Park is via Evans-To-Locks Road. A block after Evans-To-Locks Road, they intersect the eastern terminus of Evans Town Center Boulevard (which also goes to downtown), before immediately meeting the northern terminus of SR 383 (North Belair Road). Past North Belair Road, the roadway’s divided highway begins, before they meet the western terminus of Rountree Way (formerly Old Evans Road). Few blocks later, they meet the northern terminus of Towne Centre Drive and the western terminus of River Watch Parkway. Past this intersection, the divided highway ends and they go through the south of Mullins Crossing shopping center. There, they meet the eastern terminus of Owens Road. They curve to the east and intersect SR 232 (Columbia Road) and the southern terminus of Ruth Street on the Evans–Martinez line. SR 104/SR 232/Washington Road travel concurrent for approximately 0.2 miles (0.32 km). At an intersection with the eastern terminus of Old Evans Road and the western terminus of Bobby Jones Expressway, SR 232 splits off onto the expressway. SR 104/Washington Road later meet the northern terminus of Davis Road and the western terminus of Baston Road before curving to the east-southeast. Later, SR 104/Washington Road enters the Richmond County and the city limits of Augusta.[5]
Through Augusta
[edit]Immediately after entering the county, Washington Road immediately enters Augusta city limits and SR 104/Washington Road intersect Pleasant Home Road and the western terminus of SR 104 Connector (SR 104 Conn.). At this intersection, SR 104 splits off to the north-northeast on Pleasant Home Road, while SR 104 Conn. takes the Washington Road name. At the eastern terminus of SR 104 Conn., they intersect SR 28 (Furys Ferry Road) and the northern terminus of Kings Chapel Road. Here, SR 28 takes the Washington Road name. A block later, SR 28/Washington Road meets an intersection with the western terminus of Beverly Heights Drive and the eastern terminus of Warren Road. They later meet the eastern terminuses of Patriots Way and Stevens Creek Road. Past Stevens Creek Road, the roadway widens to six lanes as they approaches to meet an interchange with I-20 (Carl Sanders Highway). They meet the western terminus of Center West Parkway and the eastern terminus of Boy Scott Road. Past this intersection, the roadway narrows to four lanes and continues through the commercial shop districts. They meet an intersection with southern terminus of Bertram Road, before meeting the intersection of the southern terminus of Alexander Drive and the northern terminus of Berckmans Road. Access to private parking for Masters Tournament is via Berckmans Road. Immediately after curving to the southeast, SR 28/Washington Road meets the western terminuses of Azalea Drive and Eisenhower Drive, as they skirt along the northeastern edge of Augusta National Golf Club, southwest of Garrett Elementary School. They meet an intersection with the western terminus of Woodbine Road and the eastern terminus of Vineland Road. After this intersection, Washington Road soon meets its official eastern terminus at an incomplete interchange with the western terminus of Broad Street, just northwest of Lake Olmstead. From here, SR 28 continues to the east, known as the John C. Calhoun Expressway, a freeway that leads to the southeast part of downtown Augusta.[5]
National Highway System
[edit]The only segments of Washington Road that are part of the National Highway System, a system of roadways important to the nation's economy, defense, and mobility are the following:
- During its entire concurrency with US 78/SR 10 in the Oglethorpe County segment.[7][8][9]
- During its concurrency with US 78/SR 10/SR 17 from the southeast of Aonia to the north of Thomson in the McDuffie County segment.[10]
- From Pollards Corners to its eastern terminus at SR 28’s interchange with Broad Street in the Columbia–Richmond County segment.[11]
History
[edit]Prior to 1950, Washington Road in Fulton County was formerly known as Washington Street. It formerly continued beyond its eastern end towards downtown Atlanta. Parts of the roadway were supplanted for more development towards downtown and the construction of I-20, I-75, and I-85. The remainder of the two very short existing segments of Washington Street, east of US 29/SR 14/SR 139 was renamed to Washington Avenue. Despite of that, the navigation maps like Google Maps has erroneously named the two segments as Washington Road.[6]
In 1921, SR 52 was designated on Columbia–Richmond County segment of Washington Road.[12][13][14][15] In 1937, it was redesignated west of Martinez as SR 104; SR 104 was designated on Washington Road from Pollards to Columbia–Richmond county line and SR 28 designated on Washington Road from Martinez to Columbia–Richmond county line.[16] Between January 1945 and November 1946, SR 104 was truncated off of SR 28 to the Columbia–Richmond county line. SR 104 was shifted on Riverwatch Parkway which was originally constructed in the late 1980s and early 1990s to relieve heavy rush-hour traffic on congested Washington Road and John C. Calhoun Expressway, which many Augusta area residents used (and continue to use) to travel to and from work.[17]
