Warlock's Gauntlet is a free and open-source video game developed by members of the Polish amateur game-development community centred on the Warsztat website.[1][2] It is a top-down fantasy action game in which the player controls a battlemage, fights monsters, gains experience and learns new spells.[3]
The developers cited Gauntlet, Get Medieval, Crimsonland and Diablo as influences.[1][2] Version 1.0 was released in January 2011 for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X after more than two years of development.[4] Development continued after the initial release, and version 1.3 appeared in March 2012.[5]
Gameplay
[edit]Warlock's Gauntlet is played from a top-down perspective and combines action-game combat with role-playing elements. The player uses magical spells to fight enemies while gaining experience and expanding the character's repertoire of abilities.[3][6]
The original version included 25 randomly generated levels and more than 60 spells.[3][6] Enemies have different strengths and weaknesses, encouraging the use of different spells in combat.[6]
The game includes a local two-player cooperative mode but no network multiplayer.[3][7]
Version 1.3 altered the game's structure by introducing a world map and a town where gold collected during play could be exchanged for stronger spells. The update also included graphical and balancing changes.[5]
Development
[edit]The game began as a collaborative project among users of Warsztat, a Polish website for amateur and independent game developers.[1] According to the archived project page, development followed an earlier community initiative in which users proposed and discussed possible projects. An Assembla workspace was used for planning and documentation.[1][8]
An initial attempt did not progress beyond the design stage. The project was later revived by Warsztat users rAum and toxic, with around 20 contributors taking part at various stages of development.[1]
The Warsztat project page credits Szymon Kurek, Thyros, rAum, toxic, DamorK, ShadowDancer, Xirdus and dextero as programmers, nexor with concept art, and Dab with the Mac OS X port.[1] The game used OpenGL, and its developers made the source code and development discussions publicly accessible.[1]
Version 1.0 was released on 14 January 2011. It included a map editor for Windows and allowed much of the game's content to be modified through editable XML and PNG files.[4]
The source code was originally hosted on Bitbucket. A later GitHub mirror identifies itself as a copy of that repository and preserves the game's source code and related files.[7]
Release
[edit]Version 1.0 was released for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X in January 2011.[4] The game was added to the digital distribution service Desura in February 2012.[9]
Version 1.3 was released the following month.[5] A surviving project page continues to provide downloads of version 1.3 for Windows and Linux.[10]
In 2013, graphical assets from the game were published on OpenGameArt.org. The collection includes character and monster graphics, spell icons and environmental artwork.[11]
Coverage
[edit]GRYOnline.pl described Warlock's Gauntlet as a two-dimensional fantasy action game with role-playing elements and noted its character-development system, large selection of spells and two-player mode.[6]
dobreprogramy also covered the game, describing it as an open-source community project created by Warsztat users and noting the influence of Gauntlet, Get Medieval, Crimsonland and Diablo.[2]
