Purpose

[edit]

When any template is nominated for deletion, it is in the Project's best interest that this receive attention from a properly fair number of concerned individual members. {{tfdnotice}} provides a consistent mechanism for such notification, including a helpful link to the correct TfD entry.

Usage

[edit]

Place this notice on the Talk page of interested parties, such as nominated template creator. In the case of popular or significant nominees, it may be appropriate to give wide notice.

{{subst:tfdnotice|Nominee}} ~~~~

The parameter is the name of the nominated template. As TfD's scope does not extend beyond Template namespace, there is no need to supply that element of the name.

Substitution should be used with this template.

Discussion

[edit]

This template survived TFD - see Wikipedia:Templates_for_deletion/Log/Not_deleted/May_2005. Radiant_* 08:33, May 24, 2005 (UTC)

Doesn't seem to be getting much use - see Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:Tfdnotice Noel (talk) 20:40, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
This template can, and definately should be substituted using the "Subst:" parameter, so looking at the "What links here" info is useless. On the other hand, I have been putting notices on most of the Talk pages of the creators of the templates that I have nominated at TFD, but have found that a boilerplate notification doesn't work for me. [edit]

Please note that this template doesn't (didn't) work correctly as advertised. If one follows the instructions at Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Instructions, you get a link to, say, Wikipedia:Templates for deletion#Cleanarticle instead of the correct Wikipedia:Templates for deletion#Template:Cleanarticle. I've changed the template to do the latter. If you want to change it back, you'll have to alter the instructions to make them consistent. - dcljr (talk) 1 July 2005 05:58 (UTC)

My Misleading Edit-summ

[edit]

I summarized confusedly and confusingly, bcz i lost track of the fact that i was viewing an edit from the middle, not the top, of the page's history. An accurate summary would have read

rv to pre-error version that somehow slightly differs from the mistaken editor's attempt to restore.

I'm sorry for any confusion that my sloppy investigation may have caused colleagues.

Template name

[edit]

Might it be worth moving this to Template:TFDNote to match Template:AFDNote? --Rumping (talk) 17:25, 26 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Should this template say "deletion" or "discussion"?

[edit]

This template currently says "Template:Example has been nominated for deletion", but the page is called "Wikipedia:Templates for discussion", and sometimes templates are nominated for merging or redirecting, not deletion. Should we change this word to "discussion"? I would support the change, for consistency. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:15, 21 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

 Done after no objections were posted here for a week, for consistency. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:11, 29 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Jonesey95: No, this template is not used for merge ... proposals. There's a separate template called {{Tfm notice}}. 173.206.37.177 (talk) 20:43, 21 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yes, but merging is one of several possible outcomes of a TfD, so there is no need to prime discussion towards deletion. Paradoctor (talk) 20:57, 21 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

dependency?

[edit]

I noticed this on another user's talk page. I presume that on the user's page, the nominating editor wrote summat like this:

{{subst:Tfd notice|Tfd notice}}

which renders this phrasing:

Template:Tfd notice, a dependency of this template, has been ...

'a dependency of this template'? I'm not sure that makes any sense. A dependency of what template?

Is {{Tfd notice}} rendering as it is intended to render?

That was a bug introduced a couple of days ago by Awesome Aasim, apparently without any testing in the sandbox, discussion on this page, or even an edit summary. I have reverted it. A trout to Awesome Aasim. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:32, 15 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Umm, before you start handing out Oncorhynchus, I think that the subst'd rendering still includes 'a dependency of this template'. The unsubst'd rendering does not. Preview a sandbox with these:
{{subst:Tfd notice|Tfd notice}}
{{Tfd notice|Tfd notice}}
Trappist the monk (talk) 16:36, 15 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
The idea was that if the TfD notice was placed on the talk page of a template or module which uses a template it should say "a dependency". I'll need to do more checking but when I "show preview"ed (and especially using the "Preview pages using this template" on testcases), the issue was invisible. Perhaps I made a typo somewhere, it happens sometimes. Aasim (話すはなす) 19:47, 15 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
It must be a potential bug with how the parser functions handled substitution, since when I safesubsted the yesno, the bug went away. Perhaps the template was not being transcluded but the literal characters {{yesno|1=...}} was being passed in. Whatever the cause I fixed the behavior. Aasim (話すはなす) 19:53, 15 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
That looks better to me now. The only way I can get the dependency text to show now is to add |dependency=yes to the transclusion or substing. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:55, 15 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
