How to present term of a person who served only for one day? WikiEditPS (talk) 06:11, 25 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Sort

[edit]

For the | party and | other_party parameters, do we sort the current party at the top or go chronologically? It would be great if the template recommended a standard sorting method for consistency. Right now, Mahathir Mohamad has the current party at the bottom, while Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has it at the top. ~2026-34186-41 (talk) 10:53, 10 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Slightest discrepancy between infobox officeholder and infobox person

[edit]

In infobox person (as seen at Wendell Willkie), the | party parameter is outputted with the label Political party, while in infobox officeholder it is outputted with the label Party. I feel like the link is not really necessary and this infobox could just be homogenized to use the same label. Thoughts? 1brianm7 (talk) 20:54, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

I am an idiot and did not realize that the parameter is named political_party in infobox person. I would still say that the link in unnecessary, but I guess I can see the argument that "Political" is unneeded, as it is obvious in any case where infobox officeholder is used. 1brianm7 (talk) 20:57, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Endorse - Frankly this should have been done with the recent cleanup and I don't really know why we didn't do it so that is on me. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 21:41, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Burial place parameter

[edit]

May a "Burial place" parameter please be added to this so that it can be used instead of "Resting place"? One already exists for Template:Infobox person, and Wikipedia shouldn’t be using polite euphemisms. I’ve read the two previous discussions on this matter in this page’s archives; both fizzled out, and the last one was five and a half years ago. Keeper of Albion (talk) 20:20, 24 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

We are definitely not going to add |burial_place= in addition to |resting_place=. Absurd to have both. If you feel that resting should be changed to burial, that is one thing, but having both is not needed. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:54, 24 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Why is it absurd and why is it not needed? Keeper of Albion (talk) 21:02, 24 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
We are not adding a conflicting parameter just for a synonym of the same word. Obviously if you want to try to secure WP:CONSENSUS for this, you are free to, but I for one would strongly object to this addition. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 21:11, 24 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Please change:

| label12 = {{longitem|Other party}}
| data12 = {{{other_party|}}}

Back to:

| label12 = {{longitem|Other political affiliations}}
| data12 = {{{other_party|}}}

That undoes this recent edit by Zackmann08. Zackmann08's edit is shorter and has better line wrapping. But "other_party" is often used for non-parties, as shown here. (Happy to hear other proposed wordings.) CopyleftEverything (talk) 03:20, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Support:

I started writing this before CopyLeftEverything posted the above:

Recently, User:Zackmann08 changed the parameter/label "Other political affiliations" to "Other party." The reason given in the edit summary is for "Improving word-wrapping". This has caused a bit of chaos over at Talk:Democratic Socialists of America because, according to their own website: We are a political and activist organization, not a party.... If "affiliations" is not permitted, how do we account for memberships/affiliations in political organizations that are not parties without a new parameter/label of some sort? Can it be added in addition to? Also, isn't text wrapping different depending on the device a person uses? It may not be an issue on a phone if it is a problem on a PC or a Mac. Also, couldn't the problem that Zackmann08 is trying to fix be resolved by Zooming in and out on their own device? Im trying to think of other political organizations that candidates can be affiliated with in the same way as DSA but I'm drawing a blank. Kire1975 (talk) 03:25, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
 Done I have reverted my own edit. For the record, I felt this was simply a longer label than was necessary. Far from the hill I wish to die on! Clearly there is an objection to this so I'm happy to revert it. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 03:38, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I agree the label is too long!! Not sure what to replace it with, though. :( CopyleftEverything (talk) 03:43, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Could you not change it to "Other affiliations"? Removing the word "political" will solve a lot of problems. Kire1975 (talk) 04:06, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I support that. Something to consider as well is that whatever the label is changed to, the parameter name (|other_party= should also be changed to reflect what the label says. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 04:09, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Not opposed! My only concern: Removing "political" might encourage people to use it for non-political "affiliations".
Usage note: other_party is routinely used for two separate purposes: First, to note past membership when someone has switched political parties. Second, to note current membership in multiple political groups (such as minor parties, fusion voting parties, or quasi-parties). Makes me wonder if ideally the parameter should be split into past_parties "Past parties" and political_affiliations "Political affiliations". CopyleftEverything (talk) 04:15, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Removing "political" might encourage people to use it for non-political "affiliations".
There may be times when that could be appropriate. Kire1975 (talk) 04:19, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I strongly support splitting the parameter into two parameters and changing the wording of |other_political_affiliations= to |political_affiliations=; that would hopefully solve the length issue while discouraging people from including non-political affiliations. Otherwise, I agree with Kire1975 that we could use |party= for multiple parties, with time ranges for clarity where necessary. Dofrg (talk) 10:22, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
If an official is a member of two genuine political parties at the same time, wouldn't it be standard practice just to put both of them in |party=? Kire1975 (talk) 04:16, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Please revert the changes by Zackmann08 at Special:Diff/1351066124/1362385347, which is causing unnecessary transclusions of {{longitem}}, misaligning templates such as {{Infobox incumbency}}. Thank you. Neveselbert (talk · contribs · email) 07:35, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Neveselbert: Can you please show a page where there is an issue? Adding {{Longitem}} simply prevents additional vertical spacing... If there is an issue, I am happy to fix it or self-revert but can you please point to an actual article where you are seeing an issue? State param should not be US specific

[edit]

Apologies if this is difficult to implement, but it seems less-than-ideal that default behavior for the state parameter is to render text about the U.S. Congress (as in this page revision). Would it be feasible to rename state to us_state, or otherwise fix this behavior? signed, Rosguill talk 21:52, 6 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

If it's being improperly used, it would probably be worth updating that parameter name. Primefac (talk) 21:58, 6 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I agree that if this is causing issues, it should definitely be corrected. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 02:33, 7 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
