Template-protected edit request on 15 March 2026: Add Mexican name
[edit]This edit request has been answered. Set the |answered= parameter to no to reactivate your request. |
Per this edit on the sandbox. Working as shown by this edit. Because the wording "Hispanic American" lacks specificity and because a precedent was set with Chilean name. Moscow Mule (talk) 20:30, 15 March 2026 (UTC)

- Perfect. Thank you very much. Moscow Mule (talk) 13:37, 22 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Moscow Mule: Is this really what we want? Hispanic American is not a language. Chilean is not a language. Mexican is not a language. Spanish is. 162 etc. (talk) 18:20, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
- @162 etc.: No, not languages, but certainly cultures. And the original template says "Spanish", not "Spanish-language". Even so, I never saw a problem with using the "Spanish" template for Latin American articles, but with the creation of the separate "Hispanic American names" article (which, in all honesty, I'd have preferred as an expansion of the Spanish names article) and its template, then the "Chilean" template, I felt that boat had sailed. So that's where we were, and that's why I jumped on the bandwagon. Undeniably, though, I'm happier with Mexican bios being tagged as "Mexican name" rather than the vague and ambiguous "Hispanic American name" (but freely admit that could be IDONTLIKEIT territory). Moscow Mule (talk) 19:48, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
- I note that this is all fairly recent (the Hispanic American parameter was added in January) and the usefulness of such labels seems dubious. 162 etc. (talk) 20:19, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
- I was wrong in thinking Naming customs of Hispanic America was only created recently, but yes, the template business dates back only a couple of months to the start of this year. I suppose the clock could be turned back (perhaps re-wording the "Spanish name" tag to "Spanish-language name") but the Hispanic American tag's creation was accompanied by an editing flurry to incorporate it over existing "Spanish name"s. Which is what I meant by "the boat has sailed", even as I reacted to those changes with an audible sigh. Moscow Mule (talk) 21:30, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

Expand Lebanese
[edit]Instead of “Lebanese”, the customization should be expanded to the Arabic-speaking world in general and link to Arabic name, as patronymics of this type are still used in a number of countries not limited to Lebanon. ~ IvanScrooge98 (talk) 15:07, 15 April 2026 (UTC)
- What exactly are you asking for?
|lang=Lebaneseworks differently from|lang=Arabic, and links to two different pages. You can see them both in this version of my sandbox. In your explanation, you linked to a section of an article that has no sources. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:48, 15 April 2026 (UTC)- I’m asking that the two merge so that both link to Arabic name and both use the first parameter for the patronymic and the second for the family name. ~ IvanScrooge98 (talk) 23:56, 15 April 2026 (UTC)
Discussion on the wording of the Hispanic American naming template
[edit]See here It would be better if any change in wording (if agreed upon) could be made to the template, instead of singling individuals out for having surnames from outside of Spain. Unknown Temptation (talk) 12:02, 25 July 2026 (UTC)
- Support changing the Hispanic American template so it's like the East Slavic template. Anythingyouwant (talk) 22:01, 26 July 2026 (UTC)

Description of suggested change:
Please change the Hispanic American template so it's like the East Slavic template. The East Slavic template says, "In this name that follows East Slavic naming customs, the patronymic is Aleksandrovitch and the family name is Imyarek." So the Hispanic American template should be edited likewise: "In this name that follows Hispanic American name naming customs, the first or paternal surname is Bolívar and the second or maternal family name is Palacios." The current template works okay if the name that follows Hispanic American naming customs is a hispanic name, but sometimes it's not. See BLPN discussion. Thank you.
