Greater Lebanon variant

[edit]

Is it possible to add a variant flag? (link) It is the flag that (Greater) Lebanon had between 1920 and 1943. Although Lebanon wasn't yet independent, it would still be useful to have the flagicon (to be displayed, for example, on football matches desputed by the national team until 1943). Nehme1499 (talk) 15:25, 15 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

This looks like a reasonable request. I see the flag displayed at Flag of Lebanon. What should the flag be called on the documentation page? For example, editors can use "army" to get the army flag, which is described by the template's output as "Lebanese Ground Forces". So two questions: (1) What word or phrase should be used to generate the flag used during the French Mandate? and (2) What should the words to the right of the flag say? – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:49, 15 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
(1) I would go with "1920", as it was the year that the State of Greater Lebanon came to be; (2) The words on the right should be Greater Lebanon. Nehme1499 (talk) 18:03, 15 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
 Done. Using "1920": Lebanon; Using "1920" with |name=Greater Lebanon: Greater LebanonJonesey95 (talk) 19:37, 15 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Please could you add this missing flag for the navy and naval

VNW060222 (talk) 14:16, 22 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Not done for now: editor VNW060222, please check your edit. You have File:Naval Jack of Lebanon.gif for the |link alias-naval=, which if I'm not mistaken should link to an article? P.I. Ellsworth, ed. put'er there 11:08, 24 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
You right my bad. I just change. VNW060222 (talk) 13:45, 25 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
To editor VNW060222: the above variants have been  completed – the 1918 and 1920 variants were kept to avoid breaking links. If you have fixed those links let me know and they will be deleted from this template. P.I. Ellsworth, ed. put'er there 06:24, 28 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Change
| flag alias-1920 = Lebanese French flag.svg
to
| flag alias-1920 = Flag of Lebanon during French Mandate (1920-1943).svg
reason: the cedar tree fits correctly inside the white vertical band, as seen in c:File:Émile Eddé & Emir Khaled Chehab.jpg. Also, 1920b already has the same flag as 1920. Nehme1499 21:54, 28 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Description of suggested change: The label "c. 17th century" is redundant, as we already have 1697. Also, the flag shown for 1697 (the white one) was not used in 1697, rather in 1918. Therefore, the label "c. 17th century" should be deleted, and the flag shown for "1697" should be the one at "c. 17th century" (the blue one). And replace with the svg version c:File:Chehab family flag.svg.

Diff:

flag alias-c. 17th century = Chehab Emirate Flag.png
+
var1 = c. 17th century
+
flag alias-1697 = Cedar flag.svg
+
flag alias-1697 = Chehab family flag.svg

@Paine Ellsworth: On second thoughts, I would remove the "1697" flag completely. It is a flag of a historic dynasty that ruled over present-day Lebanon. It can not be considered an actual Lebanese flag. The first "flag of Lebanon" in the modern sense is the 1918 one. I don't see the ancient Roman flag on the Italian equialent template, or the Maratha Empire flag for India. Nehme1499 00:55, 2 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Evidently at some point an editor thought that period to be an important enough part of the History of Lebanon, which we can read a little about at Emirate of Mount Lebanon#Shihab dynasty, to include their flag here and in Flag templates. So this is something that would require consensus before it is erased. P.I. Ellsworth, ed. put'er there 01:15, 2 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Paine Ellsworth: VNW060222, who had requested for its addition, seems to agree for the removal of the Chehab flag. Also, I have some final requests: replace the 1918 flag with c:File:Flag of Lebanon (1918-1920).svg and replace 1920 with c:File:Flag of Lebanon (1920-1943).svg, as they more accurately show the brown trunk. Remove variants 1920c (unsourced variant) and 1920d (redundant, as it's practically same as c:File:Flag of Lebanon (1918-1920).svg). Thanks :) Nehme1499 01:01, 4 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much, editor VNW060222! P.I. Ellsworth, ed. put'er there 13:13, 4 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Paine Ellsworth: Is there a way to merge {{Country data Greater Lebanon}} with this template? So that writing {{flag|Greater Lebanon}} shows Greater Lebanon, and writing {{flag|French Lebanon}} shows French Lebanon? Also, could you kindly replace 1920b with c:File:Flag of Lebanon during French Mandate (1920-1943).svg, so that the cedar fits correctly? Nehme1499 13:16, 4 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
