I would suggest a non-breaking space between the icon and the link. Also I created a documentation page for the template. A demonstration can be found at Template:Category-inline/sandbox. Partly done: I've adjusted the template to use the documentation page you created, but I don't understand what you want to do with the spacing. You're asking for a to be added then pointing to a sandbox that has the space entirely removed. Those are very different things, so please do elaborate to what you are hoping for.
