Coordinator tasks
[edit]- These tasks should be done as often as needed—ideally, on a daily basis.
- Assessment
- Monitor the daily assessment log. The main things to look for:
- Articles being removed. This is usually legitimate (due to merges or non-military articles getting untagged), but is sometimes due to vandalism or broken template code.
- Articles being moved to "GA-Class" and higher quality. These ratings need to correspond to the article's status in the GA and FA lists or the A-Class project review.
- Deal with any new assessment requests and the backlog of unassessed articles.
- A-Class review
- For each ongoing A-Class review:
- Determine whether the review needs to be closed and archived, per the criteria here.
- If a review has been open for a month without at least three editors commenting, leave a reminder note on the main project talk page, using the following boilerplate:

Before a task force can be created, it is necessary to decide on a name for it. The process requires both a full name (e.g. "French military history" or "American Civil War") and a one- or two-word or acronym shorthand used for some template parameters (e.g. "French" or "ACW"). The instructions below use the "Fooish military history" task force (shortened to "Fooish") as an example; when creating an actual task force, remember to substitute the correct name, rather than actually creating the example pages.

Under the current system used by the Military history Wikiproject, coordinators are tasked with handling certain project-specific operations such as closing A-Class reviews. Because coordinators are held accountable to the project an election is held once a year to determine who among the community's members will serve as a coordinator. While the election itself is a simple approval vote, creating the pages needed for the election can be tricky. Therefore, this Academy page will serve as a walk-through on how to correctly set up the election pages. Before the election[edit]Before any election pages are created, the matter of the coordinator election must be brought up with the current coordinator tranche. Ideally, this should be done sometime between mid-July and early August. The reason that the coordinators must first discuss the matter of the election is to settle on the finer details of the upcoming election. Three key aspects should be decided. The first detail relates to the project's activity level: as the activity level in the project rises or falls, the number of coordinators judged to be needed to effectively run the project increases or decreases. Accordingly, then, the coordinators need to establish how many slots should be opened to the project members. In general, the project currently operates efficiently with roughly 8–11 coordinators, although the exact number settled on for the upcoming tranche must understandably be decided based on the workload and the efficiency of the current coordinator tranche. The coordinators must also decide if the total number should include or exclude the Lead Coordinator, which can cause the total settled on to fluctuate by one. The second factor that needs to be discussed is the election format. Historically, when the system was introduced, the format was 14 days for nominations followed by 14 days of election, which worked well for the community but created an illusion that the process was "slow". As a result of this perception the community approved a change in the process that now sees the election format using a 10-day nomination period followed by a 10-day voting period. This process is marginally faster than the older two week system, which helps speed the process up. While the coordinators have used this option for several years, they also have the option of introducing or implementing a new nomination/voting scheme if one is judged to be needed. Accordingly then, the coordinators will need to settle on which of the three options they feel will work the best for the upcoming election. The final matter that must be discussed is the exact date of the election. Ideally, the entire election should take place in the month of September, but as there are 30 days in September the coordinators will need to officially designate a starting day for the nomination period. Once this day is decided, the format the coordinators have agreed upon can be used to determine when the nomination period will end, and by extension when the voting period will start and end. Collectively, these three points once settled will provide the information needed to establish the election pages. [edit]Nominations for awards are made and voted on by coordinators at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Military_history/Awards. An A-Class Medal nomination needs at least two coordinators' votes to succeed, and the Chevrons with Oak Leaves a majority of coordinators' votes. All coordinators are requested to review the following:
ACRs for closure
[edit]All A-Class reviews are eligible for closure 28 days after they were opened, or 5 days if there is a clear consensus for either promotion or non-promotion, by any uninvolved coordinator. The closing coordinator should check the review page carefully to ensure that there are three general supports and supports (or passes) for both the image and the source reviews, and that there are no outstanding points to be addressed. A guide to manually closing A-Class reviews is available, but normally the closing coordinator just needs to change A-Class=current in the {{WPMILHIST}} banner to A-Class=pass or A-Class=fail.

Archived two project page talk pages; correctly?
[edit]@WP:MILHIST coordinators: I have manually moved two threads about the December backlog reduction drive and military historian/newcomer of the year nominations and voting from active talk page to Archive 178. The threads were completed near the end of the year. I put them after a December 31 completed thread in the archive. They were taking up considerable space on the active page. If I did that incorrectly or otherwise messed up the archiving, please let me know so I won't repeat any mistake. Only non-officer to have a United Confederate Veterans camp (chapter) named after him. - @WP:MILHIST coordinators: I have reviewed the previously unreviewed articles for January. I did not strike through some of them because I have questions or suggestions for further review or comment for several of them this month. Almost all of the articles I did not strike have short leads. Most are two sentences. A few long articles have three or four sentences but also appear not to be sufficient summaries. The question then arises whether all of these should be reduced to start class (failing b3) for lack of a sufficient lead. Also, does it make any difference if the article is relatively short. I think the answer is that for consistency sake it does not though I may have a few inconsistent comments above, which I meant to be along the lines of the question about article length making any difference. In requests for assessment, I have asked editors to increase the lead for a B class assessment. If I recall correctly, other assessors do as well. The conclusion may be that articles with short leads which are not adequate summaries for B class and bot assessments as such should be reassessed with b3 being the requirement which the articles fail to meet.
- While some confirmation (or rebuttal) on the length of the leads is the question about most of the open articles. A few others have other questions such as whether the article is within the scope.
- Sorry not to be more definite and just review and close as I view the proper assessment. However, the sufficiency of a short lead seems to be arising more lately - and in articles of varying length. So some further comment or definite review of the noted articles by one or more coordinators (or even experienced assessors if any watch this page) seems appropriate for consistency and definiteness. Perhaps the lack of definiteness only exists for me. Nonetheless, with some further expression of consensus on this and some approach for these articles expressed, I would be more confident on not leaving the reviews for further comment for inadequate leads and assess the articles accordingly.
- A few other questions such as scope of the project may continue arise for comment, of course. I plan to check back on this month in a week or two to see if it should be closed in its current state - or with a consistent judgment on the leads. Sorry to bring this up for others to spend a time on but I would like to put these questions to rest with some additional comment or decision if possible. And then we can archive this month. Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Military aviation task force
[edit]@WP:MILHIST coordinators: @Hog Farm, Sturmvogel 66, and Zawed: I have updated the list of participants in the military aviation task force to eliminate blocked users and links to removed user accounts. I have hidden users that have not edited for more than three months - almost all are much longer. This has removed or hidden 48 of the 75 previously listed active participants. I think that links to these inactive or disappeared users are a hindrance and time waster for anyone looking to contact current editors on topics within this large category. As it now stands, even a few of the remaining participants do not edit very often. The warning on the page about inactive users is still well taken.
Articles on these topics appear to be coming up for assessment or reassessment more often than for some other topics, which is the reason that I did these updates.
It appears that I made a spacing error that reduced the margins on later sections. It may relate in some way to the table in the next section. This may or may not make much difference to the reader or length of the page in general. Nonetheless, I think it would be good for someone to look at this to see if it is a problem of any sort and, if so, to adjust the margins if you know how to do it.
I also made an update to the maritime task force but do not appear to have altered the layout of the page in any way, which I find puzzling. In line with the text on the page, I did not remove any user who had edits within the last year. Perhaps I will look at other task forces later but it took considerable time today to review just these two. (I updated some, but not near all participant lists, about this time last year.) Thanks. - There were some unclosed comment brackets that were preventing the div style tag from closing (and hence carrying over the column width to the rest of the page). I've fixed it. I wonder if this is something a bot might be able to do; periodically comment out editors from the list if they haven't edited in a year and readd them if they return? Bots cluttering WT:MILHIST
[edit]There seems to be several new bots that are posting a new threads at WT:MILHIST each time an article within the project's scope is nominated for a move. These are User:TarnishedPath/MovePlus, User:TheTVExpert/rmCloser and User:BilledMammal/Move+. Given the huge scope of the project, this is cluttering up our discussion page with low priority stuff. A-class reviews, again
[edit]We have a large backlog of A-class reviews once again, with none having passed since January. I think that there's a need for much more active management by the coordinator team to try to rebuild momentum. Quite a few of the nominations date from last year:
- I have just closed Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Bertrand Clauzel as unsuccessful as it has been open since October and stalled since December
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/1931 Salvadoran coup d'état has also been stalled since December
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/HMS Lizard (1757) - I have pinged the nominator, who has not addressed my review left about a month ago
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Battle of Edington appears stalled
- I have closed Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/2001 Biggin Hill Airshow disasters as unsuccessful given two of the three reviews noted that it needed considerable further work, which does not appear to have occurred.
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Battle of 42nd Street appears stalled.
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Scharnhorst-class cruiser might progress
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Transocean Air Lines Flight 942 seems stalled
Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Richard Thomas Glyn is progressing very slowly

- I agree with Dumelow. As I interpret the general remarks about emeritus coordinators, those coordinators can do the same tasks as current coordinators. They should feel no obligation to do anything in particular, however. They can do as much or as little as they wish and have time or interest in doing. Another step would be to post on notice on the project talk page asking experienced users to help with A-class reviews. A few do already. As Dumelow notes, there are not many active coordinators this year so additional help is needed even more than in the past few years. Donner60 (talk) 23:30, 22 March 2026 (UTC)

ACC issue
[edit]Hey, I got my latest A-class award, but it gave me a 6th regular cross, when this should have been an ACC with oak leaves. Can somebody fix it? - I see the user has been blocked for personal attacks. That should take care of the problem which you have noted. Although three coordinators (one of whom is ill) and two emeritus coordinators are administrators, this type of problem (personal attacks) is best handled at the administrator notice board where more administrators will see it. If you are asking about the merits of the issue which led to the personal attacks, coordinators (and former coordinators if watching this page) may be able to offer comments. For wider coverage, such review requests should be made on the project talk page where it may attract more attention to the merits and perhaps even lead to mediation in some case.
- I am not suggesting this type of question or request for review might not also be raised here as well if you think it appropriate or you think help from experienced current coordinators and emeritus coordinators in particular might be especially able to help. I make the suggestion for putting the question or request on the project talk page in particular this year because there are fewer coordinators and emeritus coordinators to respond than in previous years and the usual volume of review work to be done. - For the ones with military service that we had records of their career, I kept as I lean towards that being in-scope. Albeit brief, a couple of sentences with the service record of X having fought in Y campaign, listing some promotions and units, is sufficiently historically relevant for us to consider it in scope. Trying to start an A-class review
[edit]It's been a few years, but I've finally done something better than GA quality. I moved the old review page for HMS Duke of York (17) as instructed but I can't get the new review page started. I think that I may have left a redirect behind when I moved it. If that's truly my mistake, then the instructions need to say not to do that. Thanks in advance! Invitation to beta test Adjutant
[edit]Hi there coordinators and past coordinators.
I'd like to invite you all to help beta-test "Adjutant", a user script I've been working on that's a tool to assist with MILHIST clerking activities and provides one-click options for automating a lot of repetitive manual tasks.
At the moment, the primary features are: 1-click assessment for B-class articles, 1-click moving of threads to "Requests for Project Input" or other locations. There are some A-class clerking tools around notifications for stale reviews, but they're untested and I might strip them back out to focus on areas with better ROI.
You can find the documentation and install page at WP:ADJUTANT -- installation is the same as any other user script (import to your common.js). - Yes. I made the award to Sturmvogel_66 on January 2. I did not add it to the awards page, probably because I forgot - or simply did not realize I should do it. - @Djmaschek, A.Cython, and Dumelow: Adding a new ping in the event one of you read the earlier one posted a short time ago. There is a contest log for 2023-2025. In February 2025, I set up a contest log page for 2025. I decided not to use it and added 2025 to the 2023-2024 log, then renamed it 2023-2025. (There are several earlier logs for previous years.) Unfortunately, the 2025 log page still exists but now has no content. I just deleted the captions, which were the only content. The page probably needs to be deleted to avoid confusion. I will look up how to tag it for speedy deletion, which I have done infrequently. As I have understood it previously, non-administrators can only delete an article under very limited circumstances which may or perhaps may not apply to this situation. About demoting an A-class article
[edit]Hey everyone, I noticed that Bijeljina massacre was delisted at GAR last year but still has its MILHIST A-class status from 2014. I have no comment on the quality of the article, but it seems like this may need to be reassessed (as should other A-class articles that are delisted at GAR or FAR).
