Usage

The {{WikiProject Linguistics}} project banner template should be added (not substituted) to the talk page of every article within the scope of WikiProject Linguistics. While the template does not require any additional parameters, it has a number of optional ones that add various extra features to the banner.

For quickly adding this banner to talk pages, use the basic syntax:

To avoid needlessly cluttering up talk pages, it is usually appropriate to remove any unused parameters from the template.

General parameters

• category – set |category=no if, and only if, a banner is being used for demonstration or testing purposes, to prevent unnecessary or undesirable categorization. Otherwise, omit this parameter.
• class – This WikiProject follows Project-Independent Quality Assessment. Please add valid |class= values to {{WikiProject banner shell}} instead of this WikiProject. Valid class values can be found at Wikipedia:Content assessment.
• importance – valid values are: top, high, mid, low, na (case-insensitive). See the project's importance scale for details. Setting an explicit value of NA is rarely necessary; for this, either leave |importance= blank or omit the parameter.
• auto – This parameter is for the use of bots and indicates that the article has been automatically rated:
  • |auto=length – based on the length of the article
  • |auto=inherit – because one or more other projects use this class
  • |auto=yes (or |auto=stub), in conjunction with |class=stub – as Stub-Class because it uses a stub template
    • Use of the above values (or value combinations) with this parameter populates Category:Automatically assessed Linguistics articles.
• listas – This parameter, which is the equivalent of the DEFAULTSORT sortkey that should be placed on all biographical articles, is a sortkey for the article talk page (e.g. for Noah Webster, use |listas=Webster, Noah so that the talk page will show up in the W's and not the N's of the various assessment and administrative categories; similarly, for topics with titles beginning with an article such as "the" or "a" - e.g. for The Language Instinct, use |listas=Language Instinct, The so that the talk page will show up in the L's). This is important because it is one source used by those who set DEFAULTSORT on the article; consider also setting the DEFAULTSORT for the article when setting this parameter.   If the article is using {{WikiProject banner shell}} then it is preferable to add |listas= to that template instead of a project banner template. Putting the parameter on more than one template is not required.
• maindykdate – set |maindykdate=yes if the date the article appeared in "Did You Know?" on the Main Page, if applicable.
• needs-image – set |needs-image=yes if the article would benefit from having more images.
  • This parameter populates Category:Linguistics articles needing images.
• attention – set |attention=yes if the article needs immediate attention from experienced editors. Use only if another parameter does not cover the need for attention; this should be used sparingly. It is strongly encouraged to also add a section to the talk page explaining what needs attention.
  • This parameter populates Category:Linguistics articles needing attention.

Task-force-specific parameters

• applied – set |applied=yes if the article is supported by Applied Linguistics Task Force.
  • This parameter populates Category:Applied Linguistics Task Force articles, and the relevant subcategory of Category:applied linguistics articles by quality based upon the |class= parameter.
• etymology – set |etymology=yes if the article is supported by Etymology Task Force.
  • This parameter populates Category:Etymology Task Force articles, and the relevant subcategory of Category:etymology articles by quality based upon the |class= parameter.
• philosophy – set |philosophy=yes if the article is supported by Philosophy of Language Task Force.
  • This parameter populates Category:Philosophy of language task force articles, and the relevant subcategory of Category:philosophy of language articles by quality based upon the |class= parameter.
• phonetics – set |phonetics=yes if the article is supported by Phonetics Task Force.
  • This parameter populates Category:Phonetics Task Force articles, and the relevant subcategory of Category:phonetics articles by quality based upon the |class= parameter.
• sfl – set |sfl=yes if the article is supported by Systemic Functional Linguistics Task Force.
  • This parameter populates Category:Systemic Functional Linguistics Task Force articles, and the relevant subcategory of Category:systemic functional linguistics articles by quality based upon the |class= parameter.
• theoretical – set |theoretical=yes if the article is supported by Theoretical Linguistics Task Force.
  • This parameter populates Category:Theoretical Linguistics Task Force articles, and the relevant subcategory of Category:Theoretical Linguistics articles by quality based upon the |class= parameter.

Editing this template

This template may be used on many Wikipedia articles, so damage to this template could have wide-ranging effects. Unfortunately, the template is also difficult to edit properly, since it uses rather complicated parser programming. Please use the utmost caution when changing this template.
