Common name?

[edit]

I'm curious why WP:COMMONNAME does not apply here, considering "heart attack" is so much more well-known. JDiala (talk) 10:23, 14 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Improving top-importance medicine articles: Join the Vital Signs campaign 2026

[edit]

The goal of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine/Vital Signs 2026 campaign is to bring all 101 top-importance articles—including this one—up to at least B-class quality. Many of these articles are widely read but overdue for review, so even small improvements can have a big impact.

If you watch or edit this article, your help would be very welcome. You can:

  1. Add yourself as a participant
  2. Note the state of the article in the Progress table (is the current class still correct?)
  3. Update the article based on recent clinical guidelines and review papers
  4. Help address gaps, improve clarity for a broad audience, or improve image selection

To reach B class, articles should have: suitable referencing, reasonable coverage, a clear structure, good prose, helpful illustrations, and be understandable to a broad audience. Contributions of any size are appreciated. Femke (talk) 16:00, 20 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

"Types" section

[edit]

The article mentions "five types of myocardial infarction," yet goes on to list six, one of which is not encompassed in the source provided for that section. The listed source mentions five types (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5), including subtypes 4a and 4b. The source, however, does not include "spontaneous coronary artery dissection in young, fit women" as one of those definitions. Perhaps that definition should be moved to a location in which it is not assumed to fall within the consensus mentioned prior to listing the types of MI. Hello User:Left Anterior Fascicle: thanks for bringing this up. I've removed the 6th bullet point. In the future, please WP:BEBOLD if you see errors on Wikipedia, as some talk pages might not be monitored that well. In solidarity, —Femke (talk) 🐦 11:42, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Requested move 10 July 2026

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: not moved. Editors noted that the term "heart attack" is distinct from that of an MI; the former is more general than the latter and is more of a catch-all term in common parlance. Further discussions are likely in order to determine the correct pointer for Heart attack.

Separately, a moratorium was proposed. I don't read enough consensus for that; in addition, the last RMs for a move from MI to heart attack were fifteen years ago. (closed by non-admin page mover) In solidarity, Iseult Δx talk to me 08:36, 18 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Myocardial infarctionHeart attack – Per WP:COMMONNAME and that the common term for this is heart attack. most people including me probably don't know what the current name which is a very unusual term is. ~2026-38391-81 (talk) 15:33, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

  • Support: the proposed title is obviously the WP:COMMONNAME. Joe vom Titan (talk) 17:44, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose: As clearly described under Terminology, a myocardial infarction is a science-specific mechanism for heart muscle damage (specifically, cell death assessed with specific biomarkers), and is defined differently than a "heart attack", which may be a transient, less-severe pathology. Contrary to the proposer's impression that myocardial infarction is "a very unusual term", it has been commonly accepted and applied worldwide in medical terminology over decades. Although heart attack is given as the common name in the first sentence - and so is retrieved as a search term on Wikipedia - it is more aligned in pathology with acute coronary syndrome than with myocardial infarction. Accordingly, I propose that heart attack be moved from the myocardial infarction article to the acute coronary syndrome article. Zefr (talk) 18:09, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose + one-year moratorium: This move request has been rejected before for the right reasons. As from the prior move request reasons, "Heart attack" can mean other things as the term is broad. While yes, I understand WP:COMMONNAME and it's a common term, it's not enough to change my opinion yet. TyronesEditsPages (talk) 03:22, 11 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Comment: If "heart attack" is too broad to refer specifically to this article, should the redirect point elsewhere? Perhaps a "heart attack" disambiguation page would be a better way to go. Ladtrack (talk) 07:22, 11 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps a well advertised WP:RFD discussion would be in order after this closes, assuming this article is not moved to Heart attack. —Myceteae🍄‍🟫 (talk) 18:02, 11 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I am highly doubtful that this move request is being initiated in good faith, as this brand-new unregistered account seems to do almost nothing else besides argue the intricacies of WP:COMMONNAME in various move requests across this website. The ongoing rename of Palm Beach International Airport, where this user has an extensive history of commenting, has caused quite a few accounts to initiate move requests in various articles, likely in an attempt to sway discussion on that article's talk page. In fact, this very article was actually linked in that discussion and is now being actively debated there. At the very least, if we want to engage in a good-faith discussion about this, we need to wait for all the drama over there to blow over before proceeding. But as for my opinion:
Strongly Oppose per User:Zefr above. This article is in reference to a specific medical term for a specific kind of cardiac cell death. Speaking as a medical professional, "heart attack" is a very broad and non-specific term, often misused by the general public, and continues to be used to describe a variety of entirely different conditions (e.g. unstable angina, acute coronary syndrome, coronary vasospasm, etc) and is often (incorrectly) used to describe cardiac arrest and congestive heart failure. Though the proposing user described myocardial infarction as an "unusual term," it has been widely used for decades, correctly describes the specific pathophysiology covered by this article, and is what the supporting literature in this article is referencing. If the proposing user is in fact initiating this request in good faith, I would encourage them to better familiarize themselves with this topic before initiating move requests on the basis of "unusual" words. Support a speedy close and one-year moratorium on this topic. Wichey (Let's Chat!😊) 02:58, 12 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

On Heart murmur in the top template.

[edit]

Wouldn't Heart murmur also be a point of confusion like Heart block, Heart Failure and Cardiac Arrest? I hence propose adding it into the top template. I may be wrong here; I am a human at the end of the day so please let me know If I'm wrong to make this proposal. Please ping me in your reply. Cheers!
