Sky shot is a type of firework that explodes in the sky with a colorful display of light, mostly used and bought during Kali Puja and Diwali in India. Sky shots are divided into shell fireworks, which have a single explosion in the sky, and shot fireworks, which have multiple explosions and displays by firing automated shell shots. They normally have a loud sound and bright explosion. Sky shots are typically more expensive than other firecrackers such as sparklers, spinners and tubris.[1] They can be placed between bricks or soil to avoid danger by the shell of fireworks tipping over and the explosions hitting an obstruction.[2] Shell and shots are highly manufactured in Champahati and Nilganj, some made by imitating those of the Sonny and Cock firework brands.[3]
The price of shell fireworks ranged from Rs. 500 to 800 for two or three pieces in 2024, while shots in packs of 30 cost Rs. 1250, and shots in packs of 60 cost Rs. 1850. Shot fireworks can reach up to 10,000 pieces and cost more than Rs. 1 lakh. Sky shots are made to combine lights, illumination and noise into a single firework.[2] In 2024, sky shots were exploded in large numbers near Shaheed Minar, Kolkata. Along with other firecrackers like chocolate bomb and kali potkas, they sold more than traditional fireworks like sparklers and spinners in 2024 and 2025. Various dealers and traders gave comments on the availability of sky shots.[1]
In October 2025, the Supreme Court of India lifted the absolute ban on all firecrackers to be used during Diwali and allowed green (eco-friendly) firecrackers to be used between 8 and 10 PM during Diwali. Sky shots like other commercial fireworks remained banned and regulated.[4]
