06-Nov-2007: The map definition "Template:Location map CanadaGeo" was created November 5, 2007, to allow placing markers over similar maps of Canada. It was created for using the new mapping procedure Template:Location_map_polarx, which can position markers/labels at coordinates skewed to match locations on polar-projection maps. An example using that new template is included to show markers placed on the geopolitical map of Canada. -Wikid77 20:21, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

Recalibrated based on 8 locations

21-Feb-2008: I have recalibrated the map settings to re-align markers onto precise locations for 8 points: Vancouver (west), Edmonton (west), Quebec City (east), Yellowknife (northwest), Churchill (Manitoba/center), Winnipeg (center), Alert (top), and the arctic circle (latitude 66.5 N). The new settings reduce the top/bottom distance, and lower the skew factors, with:

• top=91.1, bottom=41.3, skew=0.00005, and lat_skew=1.275.
• the longitude shift (from -90.0 degrees) is set as lon_shift=4.1.

All 8 aligned markers are shown, to verify placement, in the updated examples on the doc subpage for the map-spec template: Template:Location_map_CanadaGeo/doc. Recalibration was based upon initial alignment of Churchill (Manitoba/center), Winnipeg (center), and the arctic circle, followed by adding outer cities while adjusting skew=0.00005, and lat_skew=1.275. -Wikid77 (talk) 18:25, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

Crowded?

The current map, File:Canada geopolitical map trim.jpg is based on File:Geopolitical map of Canada.png. To me, the latter map seems to be a better choice for two reasons:

1. it is less crowded (no coat of arms and flag, however nice those may look by themselves, clutter the map fringes)
2. it does not have any incongruous fonts (the serif caption for the coat of arms and the miles added to the scale bar do not look very good).

Would this be technically possible? And are others in favour of replacing the map? Classical geographer (talk) 10:15, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Now that Location map supports more arbitrary mappings, I believe we can make this one compatible. I am going to work on it shortly. The example above should be correct when I am finished. Plastikspork _―Œ^(talk) 03:58, 21 November 2010 (UTC)
