Sandbox module in article space

[edit]

This template is currently using Module:Sandbox/trappist the monk/Cite Almanac FS and is being used in article space. That module should be moved or copied to a non-sandbox page if this template is going to continue to be used. Pinging Naraht. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:08, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Jonesey95 Understood. I was looking to change the Fraternities using the "A" page as a demo, but I agree that wasn't clear anywhere other than what I posted to WP:FRAT. I won't put it on any more mainspace page until after it gets moved out of the sandbox. I think Trappist the monk and I are close to that point.Naraht (talk) 23:20, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

remaining?

[edit]

Trappist the monk So what's left from here? 1) Update Template:Cite Almanac FS/doc 2) Copy the module to where it should be? 3) Change (not sure how) so that the default on the template page doesn't show an error?Naraht (talk) 20:34, 2 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Documentation certainly. I'll leave that to you. If you think that the module is ready, I'll move it. I'm indifferent to hiding errors at the top of template pages; they do no harm.

Trappist the monk.Only thing that springs to mind from what this is replacing is that a lot of the ones that this will replace have the name of the entry in the subsection document. So maybe instead of "Men's Organizations – K" give the ability for an argument, if it exists to make it "Men's Organizations – K - Kappa Sigma Kappa". I don't know if there is a better place than this in the output, though.Naraht (talk) 03:08, 3 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I've added cs1|2 parameters |page= and |pages= and new |organization= and changed the formatting slightly. See Template:Cite Almanac FS/testcases § organization.

This is *absolutely* gorgeous. Please copy the module, it is ready.
The only thing I'm confused about is whether in template data subsection should count as optional, and if not, how to mark it given that it is needed for some sections and not others. I know this situation exists elsewhere, the description should certainly includes "requires section". And section would get a "suggested values" field.
I don't *think* it makes sense to use this with no section, that would logically go to the main page at https://www.library.illinois.edu/slc/national-fraternity-collections/fraternity-sorority-almanac/ . IMO, The only place that makes sense to use *that* page as a reference is for the fact that Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities editions ran from 1879 to 1991 and that is currently done with simply a standard web reference to the page. Sort of tough to determine how many of those there are, only search I can come up with is looking for the link to the main page without any uofi.app.box.com links, but right now it is zero since even the Baird's Manual page has a link to the uofi.app.box.com page for the inactive-glo-men since it talks about William Raimond Baird's Alpha Sigma Chi. I'll look back at this after everything else is converted.
I'm not sure "Unknown Parameters" or "tracking" categories make sense, Something to come back to later, maybe.Naraht (talk) 15:49, 3 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Trappist the monk missed notification.Naraht (talk) 15:50, 3 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm watching this page; you don't need to ping me...
I've added a |section= keyword none which suppresses the section display so that the template links only to the main page. See Template:Cite Almanac FS/testcases § Men's Organizations. I don't know that this will ever be needed but it is there for when it is needed.
TemplateData is an abomination. It attempts to be both documentation and control all at once and fails to do either well. But, alas, we're stuck with it. I would set both |section= and |subsection= "required": true and then use the |subsection= description to explain that |subsection= is only required when |section= has as an assigned value:men, women, or institutions. Yeah, ugly; that's why I wrote: Documentation certainly. I'll leave that to you. Because TemplateData is so severely limited, be sure that you explain everything completely in the real documentation.
For the sake of internationalization, the list of accepted parameters should be moved to the data module. Once done, it is no difficult task to check incoming parameters against that list.
Trappist the monk (talk) 17:22, 3 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I saw the "none" you added, I'm watching most of the pages involved as well. :)
I appreciate your dislike for templatedata. One of the other editors on WP:FRAT apparently only edits using the VE, so unless the Template data is put in the documentation, I'm not sure she can edit it. (I only use the Visual Editor when I want to add or subtract rows or columns from a large table). Does VE require that all required fields be added before the template can be saved into the page? Where would you put the "real" documentation, in the same doc, but above? How does that internationalization work with list of accepted parameters?Naraht (talk) 17:57, 3 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don't use ve ever so I cannot answer your question about required parameters. Yeah, real documentation goes in the same doc above the TemplateData section and is written using standard wiki markup.
We create a table where the key is the parameter name in various languages. German editors translating |subsection= might add the German word Unterabschnitt:
subsection = 'subsection',
Unterabschnitt = 'subsection',
(google translation so I don't know if that is the appropriate word)
I have not written any of this yet so it may not end up as I've descibed.

Thanx. I'll try to work on the documentation tonight.Naraht (talk) 19:30, 3 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Adding a second editor

[edit]

Trappist the monk, Jonesey95 After discussion at WP:FRAT, I am trying to add Fran Becque as a second editor. I have added editor2 to the Module:Cite_Almanac_FS/data and to Module:Cite Almanac FS/sandbox, but have not changed anywhere that is editor to editor1. However even after purging, the second editor is not being added to the sandbox case in Template:Cite_Almanac_FS/testcases even after purging the testcases page. Ideas?Naraht (talk) 14:16, 18 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

fixed.

Getting the section URL

[edit]

Trappist the monk I'm having problems figuring out how to get the section_url to show. I've got one that basically goes to the women's page in general (https://www.library.illinois.edu/slc/national-fraternity-collections/fraternity-sorority-almanac/womens-organizations/) and can't figure out how to have that be the URL that something will be output. Neither setting subsection to none or dropping the subsection will cause that to work. Thanx.Naraht (talk) 23:54, 19 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

I don't understand what you are asking. Try again?
Are you are asking if there is a way to link to the women's alphabetical index page using {{Cite Almanac FS}}? No. Because the men, women, and institutions require the cited organization's first-letter as the value assigned to |subsection=. Why would we want to link to the index? Don't we know which organization's Almanac entry we want to cite?
Or are you asking summat else?
Trappist the monk (talk) 00:20, 20 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes. That URL is in the data, but doesn't appear to be able to be used anywhere (and on this case, the ref is apparently to multiple pages.) See Christian sororities.Naraht (talk) 00:28, 20 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'll look at adding an index keyword tomorrow.

Oh, pretty! Given that I think it rocks, should I move out of the Sandbox, or do you want to? Also, now see the coloration of the test cases since the "index" works in sandbox, but not in the actual.Naraht (talk) 16:00, 21 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Done. Now you must add index to the template's documentation.
