Moneta Money Bank, a.s. (stylised as MONETA), also known as Moneta Bank, is a Czech bank headquartered in Prague. It serves individuals, sole traders and small and medium-sized businesses, offering accounts, savings, mortgages and other loans. Previously owned by General Electric, it became a publicly traded company in 2016. Its shares are listed on the Prague Stock Exchange.[2][3]
History
[edit]The bank was established as GE Capital Bank in 1998. That year, it received a banking licence and took over Agrobanka's branch network and the principal part of its balance sheet.[4] It changed its name to GE Money Bank in January 2005.[5]
In May 2016, the bank adopted the name Moneta Money Bank and began trading on the Prague Stock Exchange. The initial public offering was priced at CZK 68 per share. The sale formed part of General Electric's wider withdrawal from financial services.[6][7] GE completed its exit through further share sales in September and November 2016.[8]
In December 2019, Moneta agreed to buy Wüstenrot's Czech building savings bank and mortgage bank.[9] The acquisition was completed on 1 April 2020 for €175 million. The building savings bank was renamed Moneta Stavební Spořitelna, while the mortgage bank merged into Moneta Money Bank in January 2021.[10][11]
Moneta also pursued two unsuccessful deals to acquire Air Bank and Home Credit's Czech and Slovak businesses from PPF. The first ended in February 2019 after Moneta sought a different price in response to shareholder concerns.[12]
A second proposal received shareholder approval in December 2021, but the parties abandoned it in May 2022. PPF cited changes in economic conditions, including higher capital requirements and interest rates.[13][14]
Operations
[edit]Moneta's business combines retail banking with lending to sole traders and smaller companies, including agricultural businesses. Alongside accounts and loans, it offers building savings, vehicle financing and leasing, and distributes insurance and investment funds. Its subsidiaries include Moneta Stavební Spořitelna, Moneta Auto and Moneta Leasing.[3][15]
At the end of 2025, the group served approximately 1.6 million retail and commercial customers. The bank had 122 branches and 561 ATMs of its own, with customers also able to use ATMs in a shared network. Its partners in the network are Komerční banka, Air Bank and UniCredit Bank.[15]
Ownership
[edit]As of 2026, Moneta's largest registered shareholders were Tanemo (PPF Group), with 29.94%; Mythessa Holdings Limited, with 10%; and Manecomte Limited, with 9.60%. The bank notes that some registered holders may hold shares on behalf of other investors.[16]
