List of cities in India by population
There are 496 cities in India with a population of over 100,000, of which 46 cities have a population of over 1,000,000. Mumbai is the most populated city followed by Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
Cities are a type of sub-administrative unit and are defined by the Ministry of Home Affairs.[1] In some cases, cities are bifurcated into municipalities, which can lead to cities being included within other cities.[1] India conducts decennial censuses with the two most recent being the 2001 census of India and the 2011 census of India.[a]
- The list is based on population within the boundaries of the respective Municipal Corporations and not the actual urban area.[3]
- Towns/Cities with populations of 1 lakh (100,000) are categorized as Class-I towns or Cities.[4]
- The 46 cities with populations of 1 million and above are known as Million Plus UAs (urban agglomerations) or Cities.[4]
- The 3 UAs with populations of 10 million and above are known as Mega Cities.[b][4]
