Sofia (born Phạm Thị Đan Trang on June 1, 2000) is a Vietnamese singer. She rose to prominence after winning the first season of the music competition Ca si than tuong (Idol Singer) in 2018.[1][2] She gained wider recognition as a lead vocalist on several hit singles produced by songwriter Chau Dang Khoa, including "Nhớ người hay nhớ" and "Là Do Em Xui Thôi".
Early life
[edit]Sofia was born into a musical family in Ho Chi Minh City. She is the only daughter of the late singer Kim Loan, who was a prominent contestant on the first season of The Voice Vietnam in 2012.[3] Influenced by her mother, Sofia developed a passion for music at an early age.
Career
[edit]2018–2020: Career beginnings
[edit]In 2018, performing under her birth name Dan Trang, she competed in the reality television music show The Voice of Vietnam (Idol Singer) and won the championship title, receiving praise for her powerful vocals and versatile performance style.[4]
2021–2023: Breakthrough as Sofia
[edit]In 2021, she signed with the entertainment label Super Brothers, founded by songwriter Chau Dang Khoa, and adopted the stage name Sofia. She made her official debut with the single "Nhớ người hay nhớ" featuring rapper Khoi. The song became a commercial success, charting high on domestic music streaming platforms.[5]
Later that year, Sofia joined the second season of the popular reality show Rap Viet as a supporting vocalist. Her powerful live performances during the contestants' stages received widespread acclaim from both the judges and the audience.
In 2022, she released "Là Do Em Xui Thôi" (featuring Khoi), which became another major hit, solidifying her position as one of the prominent rising vocalists in the V-pop scene.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12]
2024–present: Contract dispute and independent career
[edit]In March 2024, Sofia publicly disclosed severe conflicts with her management label Super Brothers and songwriter Chau Dang Khoa regarding financial disagreements and career direction, which led to her activities being frozen for an extended period.[13][14][15] Following the public dispute, she departed from the company to pursue her career as an independent artist.
On October 25, 2024, Sofia marked her official return to the music scene as an independent artist with the release of the ballad single "Nhắm mắt con tim vương sầu" (composed by Trung Ngon).[16][17] During her promotional event, she appeared with a significantly altered appearance and openly admitted to having undergone plastic surgery to boost her self-confidence and enhance her visual appeal before her fans.[16][18]
