El Franco is a decorative serif typeface designed in 2008 by Ethan Paul Dunham and released by the Fonthead Design foundry.[1]. The design is inspired by handwriting from the 16th-century Renaissance-era, in particular the work of the Spanish scribe and writing master Francisco Lucas[2][3], whose book Arte de escribir (1577) is regarded as one of the most advanced writing books of its time[4].

Lucas documented multiple script styles and systematic approaches to his letter construction dating to 1517, described as among the earliest examples of raised lettering[5]. Lucas' work has been widely reproduced in later typographic studies[6].

The family includes two styles, regular and distressed, the latter adding intentional wear to appear worn from continuous use[7]
