Safaa and the Tent is a webcomic and comic collection by Palestinian cartoonist Safaa Odah. It details Odah's experiences living in a tent during the Gaza war.

During the Gaza war, Odah's family home was bombed and destroyed, forcing her and her family to live in Khan Younis.[1] While living there, she posted comics on Instagram and Facebook.[2] During times where paper was scarce, Odah would draw on the sides of her tent.[3]

A print volume compiling comics Odah posted on Instagram between October 2023 and December 2024 titled Safaa and the Tent was published by The Lakes International Comic Art Festival (LICAF) in 2025. The work was created in collaboration with Mohammad Sabaaneh and was translated to English by Nada Hodali.[4][5][6] In 2025, Odah received the inaugural LICAF Special Award, both for Safaa and the Tent and her work hosting comics workshops for displaced children.[7][8]

Safaa and the Tent won Best One-Shot at the 2025 Broken Frontier Awards and was additionally shortlisted for Best Webcomic.[9] Andy Oliver of Broken Frontier described the work as depicting "sheer humanity, raw honesty and unflinching courage" and being "a vital social record of this shameful point in world history."[10][11]

From June to October 2026, comics from the work's Italian translation, Safaa e la tenda, was displayed in Italy in collaboration with Italian cartoonist Pat Carra in a exhibition called Al di là del mare. Palestina Italia (In English: Beyond the Sea. Palestine Italy). The pieces were shown in Lecce, Rome, and Modena.[12][13][14] A review of the Italian translation in the Italian magazine Lo Spazio Bianco positively commented on the collaboration between Odah and Carra.[15]

Odah was born in 1984 in Rafah.[12] She has a Master’s Degree in Psychology[12] and began pursuing art in 2009.[2] She is a member of Cartooning for Peace[16] and has created comics for Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.[17][18]

While displaced, Odah lead “Little Painter” workshops for refugee children.[2][19]

In May 2026, Odah was chosen for the Kofi Annan Courage in Cartooning Award alongside Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, which was presented by the Freedom Cartoonists Foundation in Geneva. She attended the award ceremony virtually from her tent in Gaza.[16][20]

On August 28, 2026, Odah was evacuated to France, where she begun an artist residency in Angoulême, being hosted by the Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l'image [fr] and the École européenne supérieure de l'image [fr].[1][21] She had earlier qualified for evacuation under France's PAUSE Program [fr], however her application was affected by the freezing of the program following accusations of antisemitic remarks made by a previous program recipient.[2]
