Pakka Limited (formerly Yash Papers and Yash Pakka) is an Indian packaging company based in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. It makes compostable tableware, moulded-fibre products, specialty papers and flexible packaging from bagasse (sugarcane residue) and other farm waste, and sells compostable tableware to consumers under the CHUK brand.[1] The company is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India.[2]
History

The company was founded in 1981 as Yash Papers Limited by K. K. Jhunjhunwala in Ayodhya, where it made low-grammage paper from sugarcane bagasse.[1] It listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange in 1993.[3]
Jhunjhunwala's son Ved Krishna took over the business in 1999, when it was struggling with labour disputes and weak demand.[4] Revenue grew from about ₹25 crore (US$2.6 million) in 2001 to over ₹100 crore (US$10 million) by 2012, around when the company began shifting from paper into sustainable packaging.[4] In 2015 Krishna stepped down as chief executive, and after a period of management turnover the company handed day-to-day operations to professional managers; it reported revenue of about ₹291 crore (US$30 million) and net profit of about ₹38 crore (US$3.9 million) for the 2022 financial year.[4]
The company was renamed Yash Pakka in 2019 and became Pakka Limited in 2023, the year it listed on the National Stock Exchange of India.[1][2]
Products and operations

Pakka makes compostable food-service tableware, moulded-fibre products, specialty papers, and flexible packaging such as chip bags and tea pouches.[3] In 2023 it introduced what it described as India's first compostable flexible packaging.[5] Its consumer tableware is sold under the CHUK brand.[6] The company says it exports to more than 45 countries.[3]
Pakka uses bagasse and other farm residue as its main raw material. It says its Ayodhya plant runs on biomass energy and reuses most of the chemicals used in processing.[3]
CHUK
[edit]CHUK is Pakka's consumer brand of compostable food-service tableware, launched in 2016.[1][6] The range includes plates, bowls and meal trays made from bagasse, which the company markets as home-compostable and free of plastic lining; The Better India reported that the products break down in compost within about two months.[3][1] CHUK was positioned as an alternative to single-use plastic and thermocol tableware.[1]
The tableware is produced at Pakka's Ayodhya plant, which according to The Better India employed a largely local workforce, about half of them women from nearby villages.[1] CHUK products are sold through retail stores and online marketplaces in India, and the company has run programmes encouraging restaurants and other food businesses to adopt compostable packaging.[3][7]
Expansion
[edit]In 2023, Pakka began an expansion of its Ayodhya operations known as Project Jagriti, intended to add a compostable flexible-packaging line and roughly double the plant's capacity.[8][9] In 2024 the company's board approved a revised budget of ₹675 crore (US$70 million) for the project, up from ₹550 crore (US$57 million), including a new paper machine, with completion expected by 2026.[10] To fund the expansion, the company raised ₹244.7 crore (US$25 million) in 2024, and the project was granted a state fiscal incentive of about ₹224 crore (US$23 million).[11][12] Pakka also said it was aiming for revenue of US$1 billion by the 2030 financial year.[2]
